PR - How to get the best search engine rankings
Search Engine Optimisation Tricks – myth busters
There is so much hype about Google now that it is hard to know what is fact and fiction. Here are some simple dos and don'ts about what is happening in the Google world. This straight to the point article shows you what to do and what not to do. Google is an important resource for your business, this is must read information.
Have you heard these stories?
a). Buy advertising on Google and you will get better rankings.
b). Hide keywords on your website and you can get ranked on the first page of Google
c). If you buy 10 domains you will get your website more highly ranked.
And the myths continue.
There is a show on pay television at present with two characters testing and proving, (or disproving as the case may be); whether the myths we believe in are true are just myths passed from person to person until we start to believe them as facts.
In the same way many of the myths these guys explore are passed from person to person, published in magazines or on the Internet, it is often the case with Search Engine Optimisation. Someone reads something on the Internet and tells other people. In fact, many of the people involved make a lot of money selling out of date and incorrect information.
I recently attended an Internet summit where one of the fellows, now a millionaire, was bragging on about how he has been selling the same information for the past four years. Clearly it is out of date and inaccurate now, but people still buy it so he is happy to still sell it… and of course make a lot of money from these innocent people.
That is the real problem with the web. There is more misinformation out there than good quality information. After all, for $29.95 or even $129.95 you did not really expect someone to tell you exactly how to get to the top of Google. If it were that easy everyone would be doing it.
We don't need the myth busters to help us with some of the myths about how to get up the top of the search engines. Google themselves try to warn people about all the false information. I want to share some of the false information with you today in the hope that it may save you from wasting a lot of time and your money.

***Very Important***
You need to be very clear about the fact that Google will remove your website if you break their rules. In fact it says, “we strongly encourage you to pay very close attention … some … illicit practices … may lead to a site being removed entirely from the Google index. Once a site has been removed, it will no longer show up in results on Google.com or on any of Google's partner sites”.
To be removed from the biggest pool of potential customers for your business, could cost your business hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost sales. This is truly very serious, so let's look at the “Myths”.
I have outlined some of the Myths that exist that are touted around as a fact. Don't confuse fact and fiction.
Here are the Myths (yes you could call them downright lies!)
Myth number 1 – “We can guarantee your site will be listed on Google”
A myth often used in email marketing by disreputable companies – “we can guarantee to get your website listed on Google”. On the Google website they state that it is totally at their discretion who they list on the search engine. They have the right to remove anyone at anytime without offering any reason or explanation.
Here is what Google says; “We DO NOT add all submitted URLs to our index, and cannot predict when or if they will appear” In fact, goggle spells it out when it says, “Basically, you can't buy your way into our actual search results. You can however, purchase advertising adjacent to Google results.”
You need to be very cautious of any company that says they can guarantee that they can get you listed on Google. If Google itself says that no one can guarantee getting listed, you would need to question the integrity of a company that guarantees that they can. You will in most cases find their guarantee to be worthless.
Myth number 2 – Listing on 1st page of Google
Along the same vein, companies will say they can guarantee a position listing on Google - “we can get your website listed on the first page of Google”. Again Google is very clear, they determine where everyone is positioned and have the rights to change that at any time. No web design company can promise 1st page listings, far less promise you to be listed in no one position.
While it makes a great sales pitch and there are always plenty of people who get “taken for a ride”, please be very careful. People like this will often use techniques that are unacceptable to Google and you will end up being blacklisted from Google. The end result will be that there is nothing this company can do to help you to get back on to Google – you will be on your own.
Myth number 2 – “I can buy software programs and get a no. 1 ranking”
There are many disreputable web design companies that sell software promising you to get on the top of the search engines. While the older and insignificant search engines don't care, Google certainly does. In fact, Google will ban companies using this software. This means that if either you or your web design company use this software you could find yourself banned from Google.
Imagine the cost to your business in loss of sales through not being able to access all of the customers on Google. Avoid any company that offers to sell you these packages or to use these packages on your website. In fact, you need to go one step further and check that they are NOT going to use any type of software like this on your website. Always check what the company submitting your website to the search engines is going to do and specifically ask if they use any specialized software to do this. You have too much to lose by letting cowboys submit your site – and remember they have nothing to lose.
Here is what Google itself states, “Don't use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our terms of service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google”.
There is little mistake in the meaning… you will be in trouble when Google finds that your website has been submitted by you or your web designer using these auto submission tools or submission software.
Myth number three – “Buying multiple domains will help your search engine ranking”
This like the other myths is just rubbish. It is a myth used by domain companies to try to sell you more domains. Reality is that it can hurt your rankings or even worse have you banned. Google doesn't like you listing multiple domains. This is a very dangerous myth – beware.
Here is what Google says, “Don't create multiple pages, sub domains, or domains with substantially duplicate content”. You will be wasting your money and again you risk getting Google to take you off their search engine entirely. Don't do it.
Myth number four – “We can get you listed within 24 hours”
Google currently has over 8 billion websites indexed and is constantly working to keep their search engine full of the best sites. It does not guarantee to visit your site and to list it within any time frames. In fact Google states on the website, “Google will often index your site within six to eight weeks.”

Summary
There are more myths than realities on the Internet about how to get up the top of the search engines. I have outlined some really important things that you should NOT do to make sure that you don't risk being dropped from Google. Here are some checklist points.
Checklist for web designers:
a). Look at the credentials of the people giving you information.
b). Check out where their website is listed on Google
c). If you are buying information, take a look at when it was first written. Out of date information is dangerous. Google changes how it indexes all the time, you need to know the latest information.
